Brief Description
What will you be doing?
Please note this role is part time 20 hours a week based out of our Manchester office.
Starting salary £35,582 raising to £40,029, per annum pro rata. In the role you will also get 28 days annual leave, pro rata, plus 8 bank holidays and 5 volunteering days. We offer subsidies of 75% off season tickets and 75% off leisure train travel.
You will be joining a growing strategic planning team that leads the industry in defining the future of the rail network in the North West & Central Region. You will be working with internal and external stakeholders to identify what the railway needs to deliver over the long term to maximise social and economic benefits.
The role will suit someone who thinks strategically, can take the initiative, and enjoys collaboratively working with and influencing stakeholders at various levels.
About the role (External)
Key Accountabilities
1. Support the Senior Strategic Planner in producing strategic documents on behalf of the industry by identifying the benefits of rail capacity changes, journey time improvements and alterations to train services.
2. Remit and client economic, capacity and development studies to inform and evidence long term strategic fit of schemes and initiatives.
3. Work with sponsors of major asset renewal and enhancement schemes to develop alignment and develop, where appropriate, combined renewals and enhancement strategies.
4. Input into the client requirements for schemes as they develop business cases.
5. Assist in identifying the priorities as well as presenting key findings and progress updates to industry stakeholders.
6. Review wider industry plans for consistency and strategic alignment.
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to be/ to have:
Degree or degree equivalent qualification- Knowledge of Rail Industry and Network Rail’s contractual commitments to customers and suppliers
- Analytical skills and numeracy
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Commercial and financial awareness, including understanding economic trade-off analysis
- Knowledge of rail industry and commercial framework
We would also like but it isn’t crucial to be/to have:
- Good knowledge of the customers and assets of the route
- Knowledge of estimating techniques, risk analysis and economic models and tools
- Knowledge of project development and delivery processes
- Knowledge of Network Rail’s sponsorship and Investment processes and procedures

Network Rail adheres to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the pay range advertised.
Salary: Band 4B, Starting salary £35,582 raising to £40,029, per annum pro rata
